The ecological criteria for the award of the EU Ecolabel for rinse-off cosmetic products

In December 2014 the European Commission published a long-awaited decision on the criteria required to award the Ecolabel for rinse-off cosmetics products. This document set down the basis and European standards to ensure that the same criteria are respected throughout the 29 Member States regarding the so-called ecologic cosmetics.

What does the Ecolabel stand for?

The EU Ecolabel helps citizens identify products that have a reduced environmental impact throughout their life cycle, from the extraction of raw material through production, use and disposal. Recognised throughout Europe, the EU Ecolabel is a voluntary label promoting environmental excellence that can be found in all-purpose cleaners, detergents, electronic equipment, clothes, cosmetics and a broad variety of consumer goods.

The EU Ecolabel logo on soaps, shampoos and hair conditioners means that:
• The product meets strict limits on the use of dangerous substances.
• The product has a lower impact on the aquatic environment.
• The product sets high standards of biodegradability.
• The product limits packaging waste.
• The product has a high level of performance.

What are the criteria to be awarded such label for cosmetics?

As laid down in the Annex of the decision, aspects such as toxicity for aquatic organisms, biodegradability, restricted ingredients, sustainable sources of palm oil and packaging will be taken into consideration, among others.

The purpose is to minimise the environmental impact of rinse-off cosmetic products as well as to ensure the highest level of consumer protection and the optimal performance of the product.

What are the advantages?

Consumers are becoming increasingly aware of the health and environmental impact of cosmetics. several studies have shown a tendency towards purchasing “green” cosmetics. Therefore, apart from the obvious benefits for the environment, displaying the Ecolabel would be a wonderful opportunity to be positioned as a sustainable and responsible brand.
