The EU revises legislation on waste

New rules on waste management and recycling

In May 2018, the EU legislator adopted Directive 2018/851 amending Directive 2008/98/EC (also known as the Waste Framework Directive). The EU Member States passed a set of progressive new rules to improve waste management and contribute to a wider circular economy.

Most modern waste legislation in the world

With the aim of improving the quality of the environment, protecting the human health and to make the economy truly circular, such an amendment of the Directive pushes for a truly sustainable production and consumption, focusing on the entire lifecycle of products. Several targets have been established under different regards (e.g. municipal waste, packaging waste, etc.) to be met within specific deadlines.

More responsibilities for manufacturers

The new Directive also affects Directive 94/62/EC on packaging and packaging waste with the introduction of minimum requirements for all extended producer responsibility schemes. Accordingly, manufacturers whose products fall within one of such schemes will be required to contribute financially and take care of the management of the waste stage of their products.
