Surgical masks: Belgium lifts exceptional measures

The Belgian Competent Authority concluded that the situation on the market has improved, and the exceptional measures, based on the European Commission Recommendation 2020/403, are no longer needed when it comes to surgical masks.

From February 1, 2021, it will be no longer possible to place surgical masks on the Belgian market demonstrating minimum quality following the Alternative Testing Protocol (ATP) nor alternative, international standards comparable to EN 14683.

The manufacturers will need to fully respect the applicable EU law on medical devices.

Nevertheless, those masks that had been released before February 2021 can be placed on the market until August 1, 2022, or until their expiration date, as indicated by the manufacturer.
