Label requirements to sell cosmetics in Europe

Label requirements for cosmetics in EU and UK

The labels of your cosmetics are likely not ready to be used also in the European Union and United Kingdom. Even if the compliance process for the EU and UK are different, the requirements for labels are generally the same considering one important difference, namely the Responsible Person details.

Your Responsible Person (RP) guides you through the labels compliance process and verifies that your labels meet the EU and UK requirements before the respective pre-market notifications.

What your Responsible Person checks

Your Responsible Person checks that the labels of your cosmetic products properly include:

  • Brand name and product function
  • Particular precautions for use
  • Ingredient lists
  • Expire date (either date of minimum durability or Period After Opening)
  • Batch number and nominal quantity
  • Manufacturer and product’s country of origin
  • Responsible Person name and address (two different ones for EU and UK)

Importantly, your Responsible Person also verifies that the claims you made are compliant with the EU and UK laws. Not all claims are allowed! It is very important that you make claims that you can substantiate and conform with the Common Criteria for Cosmetic Claims.

Your way to facilitate the compliance process

The Responsible Person you choose plays a determinant role in your EU and UK compliance process. Choosing a professional RP with experience and expertise in regulatory compliance prevents you from encountering any obstacles in accessing the European markets. Your RP should be your trusted partner, the representative with extensive regulatory knowledge that guides you step by step towards a successful market entry. A professional RP is your solution to facilitate the EU and UK compliance process.
