In September 2016 UNITIS, a European Organization of Cosmetics Ingredients Industries and Services, launched the NCS TOX Project in collaboration with the Botanical Alliance aiming to enhance the knowledge of natural substances in Europe. To achieve this, both associations together with 11 key actors in the botanical cosmetics industry decided to focus on creating a database of the toxicological profiles and testing information pertaining to natural substances.
A tool for safety and innovation
The NCS TOX database will entail benefits for all stakeholders involved in the manufacturing and retailing of botanical cosmetics. By facilitating the access to toxicological information, the NCS TOX database will serve as a valuable tool to demonstrate the safety of botanical products. In addition, manufacturers will be able to evaluate the safety of their products from the early production stages onwards. As such, this project should boost innovation in the entire cosmetics industry, while at the same time improving consumer safety and making botanical cosmetics more credible and trustworthy products.
What’s next?
In the summer of 2017, NCS TOX stakeholders released the results of the first phase of the project. The second phase of the project will be launched in early 2018 with the aim of further identifying the molecular groups and critical components in natural substances.
