Additional requirements in the EMC Directive 2014/30/EU

On 18th April 2014, the new EMC 2014/30/EU (Electromagnetic Compatibility Directive) of the European Parliament and the Council came into force. The new EMC Directive 2014/30/EU repealed the Directive 2004/108/EC, keeping the same scope of protection against the electromagnetic disturbance in every country within the European Economic Area.

What is  electromagnetic compatibility?

Any economic operator is obliged to demonstrate the compliance with the essential requirements of the electrical apparatus in order to limit the electromagnetic emission from equipment as well as to make them immune to the normal level of interference.

How will the new EMC Directive affect the Manufacturers?

  • The Technical Documentation shall demonstrate how the apparatus’ conformity with the applicable requirements of the above mentioned Directive has been assessed. It should also include an adequate analysis along with the assessment of the risk(s).
  • The manufacturer’s responsibilities, with regard to traceability, labeling, packaging and safetyinformation are more precisely defined and reinforced.
  • Manufacturers have specific obligation to take appropriate measures in the market surveillance. Furthermore, whenever there is a risk to the consumers, the appropriate Competent National Authority must be made aware of the non-conformity and any corrective measure shall be taken.
  • The Declaration of Conformity shall have the model structure set out in Annex IV (A template is now provided).
